After obtaining permission from the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia on February 12, 1990, PT Bank Ekonomi Raharja, Inc. was incorporated on May 15, 1989 with initial name of PT Bank Partner Prog. In the same year in September, the name was changed to PT Bank Economic Raharja later better known as the Economic Bank. The bank is a public company that has listed its shares on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Since May 22, 2009, Economic Bank became part of a group of international financial institutions, HSBC Holdings Plc., Through its subsidiary, HSBC Asia Pacific Holdings (UK) Limited. HSBC Group took over the 88.89% stake in Bank of Economic and later through a tender offer, ownership increased to 98.96%.
The bank started commercial operations as a commercial bank on March 8, 1990. Two years later, on 16 September 1992, the Bank Economic status changed to a foreign exchange bank. HSBC Group alone has more than 7200 offices in 85 countries and territories with total assets of U.S. $ 2,556 billion (dated December 31, 2011), making it one of the banking and financial services organizations in the world.
